We seem to have deviated from the main thread somewhat!

I found myself wondering if the OP's friends, who don't seem to have a
HiFi if I remember correctly, may not have a music collection in any
formats. In which case a multiroom system aimed at streaming from
Spotify or similar and internet radio might be the easiest setup for
them to use. And then there may be less complex solutions than LMS.
Maybe Volumio or Sonos?

PS I think there is a Chris and Cosey LP which finishes with an
exhortation to turn over and play the other side. There's also the
annoyance of lock grooves on some LPs. One LP in my collection even has
a lock groove in the middle of one side, necessitating getting up and
manually advancing the stylus!
