I am not familiar with the remote, but alot of the squeezebox devices had the tactile controls (buttons/knobs) coated with a "tactile feel" substance (i.e. "rubber" but not rubber). This substance deteriorates over time, so most likely this is what you are feeling. There are a few threads about it on this forum. Some claim to clean with alcohol, but I have found the best is to remove and/or repaint, but you would lose all your icons, etc. so probably best to live with it.
