Success! (I think).

I was able to pry it open very carefully using a letter opener and, most
importantly, without breaking or losing anything. Nothing looked too
bad as far as dirt/gunk goes-certainly nothing worse than would
accumulate 15 years sitting on a shelf. I cleaned the rubbery button
pad with rubbing alcohol and rubbing with a handkerchief, did the same
to the front of the case to polish it up some (no markings loss) and
rubbed the on/off electronic contact with a pencil eraser a few times,
gently.

It now seems to be working consistently. Thanks for all the advice and
help, much appreciated.

Now to spend some time going through these forums to help pick out this
squeezebox's eventual successor. After all, 15+ years of regular use is
pretty impressive but this won't last forever and Logitech abandoned
this line. I'd had a hard time finding something simple and easy enough
to use, and unobtrusive (WAF is a huge issue) and cheap enough (I'm a
product of multiple generations of New Englanders). I still think the
Squeezebox is the best piece of electronic equipment I ever bought
(except perhaps my large Advent speakers-bought in 1971 as my first
audiophile purchase and foolishly sold sometime in the eighties because
the cabinets were getting very beat up from multiple moves.
