It's confusing. NO files/tracks are assigned the abandoned genre name, but the name still shows up in the genre list, but when selected it shows as "empty". Work with MP3tag has stripped APE tags, and shows all other tagging is reconciled. There is no difference between the versions of the tagging systems.
