Here's some background. I have been importing my whole CD collection into iTunes. At this point we have about 4,000 songs loaded. (We have 3 iPods in the family, so iTunes is the logical choice.)
Server settings->iTunes->iTunes reload interval. While you are ripping, set this to a high value or even zero to disable it while you are ripping. Otherwise, the iTunes data is being reloaded every 60 seconds, and thus killing your performance.
