MixMeister has a free applet that will "look" at your music and come up with a number.
It has a few problems ... obviously, it's only one number, so if the tempo changes part way through the song, I have no idea what it does. It also gives BPM to 2 digit "accuracy" - totally useless and a waste of good bits :-) And for some reason, if you read the tags yourself, it has unicoded them, even though the spec is quite clear that it's supposed to be a bare number.
