It appears that your first thoughts were correct - un-installing and re-installing the server software with 6.2.1 (which automatically downgraded the firmware in the player to 28 appears to have solved the problem.
I'm a great believer in self help - is there a document somewhere that lists what each of the debug options refers to? I've said it before - while the software is fantastic the documentation is poor. Someone from Slimdevices needs to sit down and provide a full set of end-user documentation.
