I have a Western Digital 300 GB NAS drive with connected Maxtor external 160 GB drive running alongside the Qnap on the same network. All are set to go into standby after 30 minutes of inactivity. All of them are fairly warm to the touch when running and make a humming or whispering sound (no fan, but something's moving). After the alloted 30 minutes the the Maxtor and the WD NAS go silent and cool down. If I open files on either of the drives on standby (or start my Squeezebox - running off the WD NAS) they wake up (there may be a very short, but perceptible delay). The Qnap, on the other hand, just continues humming and and getting hot, clearly unable to go into standby...
I understand that it's better for life of these drives to leave them on all the time, rather than regularly booting from cold, which is why I'm keen to make sure the standby function is activated and working. -- happyfishman ------------------------------------------------------------------------ happyfishman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2601 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20393 _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
