I rip once but encode twice (using EAC and MAREO) - FLAC for use with the Squeezebox (and archiving) and MP3 for use in portable players and the car, so yes it does help.
It means going through 300 albums with MP3tag and adding an extra tag but I'm quite anal about keeping things neat. Unless of course you know of a better freeware tagging program.
