I have also had some weird behaviour with MusicMagic/MusicIP. I
initially began (briefly) to validate using a Windows MusicIP Mixer set
to archive (i.e. write fingerprint tags back to the music files). I
changed my mind and stopped, then switched to running the Linux
headless server (my music is on the Linux server and I decided it had
enough grunt to do the validation itself). Anyway, a number of albums
began to have squares appear at the start of the album names, artist
names and track names in slimserver. Looking at the tags in mp3tag,
they looked fine. At first I thought it was a character encoding issue,
but then I noticed a connection with MusicMagic/MusicIP. If I "touched"
the files (e.g. rewrote the genre tag) using mp3tag and did a clear &
rescan with the MusicMagic/IP server not running, the tags were all
fine. However, once I started MusicMagic sooner or later (say after
browsing to the relevant albums or after a nighly rescan) the squares
appeared again. I had noticed that all the affected tracks had
MusicMagic/IP tags. In the end I deleted all the tags, but the problem
persisted. Then I deleted the MusicIP cache (default.mp3lib) and I am
currently revalidating the entire collection (it'll take a day or so).
Even with the MusicMagic/IP server running, I am no longer getting any
squares in my tags. Something's going on, so I'd suggest trying to get
rid of your cache (just temporarily rename it) and see if you still get
the odd tags.
