I see a lot of threads about using NAS devices for slimservers. I admit the small form factor is attactive, but the drawbacks are that they are not very powerful and can be difficult to set up for a lot of people.
Here's an extremely cheap alternative for those that aren't concerned about having a slower machine: an old Dell Optiplex. If you want to go really low end, but still have the processing power of most of these NAS device, try an Optiplex GX100. They look pretty cool. Here's a picture: http://www.pckado.com/img/imageFiche6419.gif There's a company called Retrobox that sells old computers like this. I an not associated with them in any way, but I have ordered from them and have found them to be dependable. Take this deal here: Optiplex GX100, Celeron 466, 128 megs ram: $16.04: http://www.retrobox.com/rbwww/home/unit_view.asp?id=1692614&bin_id=world They charge $27 for shipping and you'll want to pick up a decent size hard drive for around $100, but throw linux on it and you have a machine capable of running slimserver for under $150. Want a little more power? Splurge and pick up this one with an 800 MHz processor, 512 megs of ram and an 80 gig hard drive for $94: http://www.retrobox.com/rbwww/home/unit_view.asp?id=1711002&bin_id=world If you do decide to go this route, just make sure the machine you're buying is the desktop model and not the tower (unless of course you want a tower, but the desktops are smaller and look cooler.) -- NWP ------------------------------------------------------------------------ NWP's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3730 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25892 _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
