To get SS working again have you tried downloading the latest version again from the update site and letting it re-install?
I had to do this when i was playing around with a utility that interogated the server and tells MSN what you are listening to. SS didn't like that and hung. A re-install fixed that. worth a shot. Sorry, can't really help with your other issues. BTW, Paul has been on paternity leave for the past few weeks, but is supposed to be back in the office tomorrow.
