A UPS might do the trick, if you get one that doesn't emit a loud BEEEEEP when it loses AC power.
I've gotta add a vote for the Tivoli Pal. We've had one for a few years, and it's a superb little radio/amp/speaker. It has a clarity and richness that you just don't find in boomboxes or portable radios. Very listenable and works well outdoors. We use it with an iPod or just by itself with FM. Some of those iPod speakers are toys, with little 1" drivers.
