KDF-- have you explored the onFailure option available in Prototype
with AJAX requests?

I would tend to agree that debugging failures in AJAX is tricky,
annoying business, but onFailure might help here...to be honest, I need
to explore that option more myself, but thought I'd point you to it as
well.
