I don't have windows defender installed on my PC so that is not the
problem in my case.

Looking in Task Manager scanner.exe is using around 40-50MB of memory
then in suddenly jumps to 500MD as does a copy of svchost.exe soon
after I get the windows error.

Anyone any ideas?
