I was running the server on my G5 (2x2.3G w/ 5G RAM) and ended up getting a reconditioned Mac MINI. It's the new dual 1.8GHz w/ 2GB RAM. I have an external 500GB FW drive holding the library. I, too, was wondering what the CPU did during streaming and opened up the App "Activity Monitor" in Apple Utilities folder. Perl takes VERY LITTLE CPU power, actually. The "thief" is LAME encoding to the individual devices. If I'm playing ONLY on my Transporter, LAME does nothing due to the fact that my wireless connection to it is 5-feet away from my Airport... translation, 100% signal and the file format remains as native as possible. My SB3 in the Master Bedroom only gets 50% signal strength, so I have to limit its bandwidth to 320kbps to work without hiccups. Once LAME is engaged for the SB3, the Transporter also receives a 320k limited stream. When it's running, LAME hits one of the CPU Cores @ 95%+. This isn't continuous but varies as LAME is required. When bandwidth is limited, I've got the LAME quality set to 3 for the TP, 6 for the SB3 and default of 9 for any connected computers. Sync is working GREAT (now) and hiccups NEVER happen anymore. -- Eric Seaberg Eric Seaberg - San Diego [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Eric Seaberg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7896 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30145 _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
