Are you using 6.5.1? There were some significant changes made to compilation handling to fix sorting and pagebar issues in browse Albums. I'm not seeing the situation that you're talking about... In browse Albums, albums never show up more than once. Even when "List compilation albums under each artist" is set, all my compilations are still sorted to the spot where "Various Artists" would appear alphabetically.
