All, I recommend "unison" file synchronizer. It works on all platforms - and even between platforms as I understand it.
I am on Linux. This should be available as a package for your distro - it certainly is with Debian. Works a charm: 1. Read The (unison) Manual 2. Set up your stuff in ~/.unison/default.prf and you can invoke it as 'unison -batch' to sync your main dir with the backup dir. unison deals with any changed, new or deleted items - it just syncs the dirs exactly.
