I think the other half of things would be to make simpler versions of some of the advanced settings. The scroll speed settings are a good example. Have a basic version with just a few options "High, Medium, Low" or something -- you'd pick high if you have a fast computer and reliable network, and it would set a small number of pixels and a higher scrolling speed.
