Take a look at the wiki page quoted, the headphone out contains a
low-cost amplifier chip.  If you amplify an already-amplified signal,
you'll get very poor audio quality.

Obviously top audio quality isn't a big consideration in this
situation, but if you can spend $1.99 to fix it, why not?
