If you're looking at Digikey for prices, then you're obviously not really building in volume. 500 unit counts are what you'd buy if you were building stuff by hand at home.
As an example, if something retails for $200 through normal distribution/retail channels, it's not a profitable venture to market it with a BOM at $100. Anyway, I said it was an "educated" guess, not fact. I also qualified why I picked that number.
