I think what we have here is a disagreement over what "ambiguous" means. If you've got TPE1 disagreement within an album, I'd say the most logical assumption is that it's a compilation, unless explicitly marked otherwise. Sounds to me like your real beef is with the inadequacies of the 2.3 spec.
