SC is open source.  If SN (closed source) didn't exist, you would not
see Sirius, Rhapsody, et al allowing their protocols to be used for
streaming to Squeezeboxen. As long as SC is open source, it needs SN
for certain features.  I'm fairly sure you will never be forced to use
SN aside when from when the providers of services require it.

It is far more than you see on the surface.  What I've said above is a
very simplified explanation of what SN makes accessible.
