In reading the minutes, it sounds like SWC has ceded the novice education to

Interesting find. I didn't realize this decision had been made.
It hasn't yet, partly because a lot depends on what you mean by
'novice': someone who's entirely new to programming? Someone who picked
up just enough on their own to get into trouble? Someone who's
programmed in X, but wants to learn some Y? I would personally like to
see DC handle "never programmed before", but does that mean SWC starts
with "I don't know how or why to write a function" (whicih would count
as "novice" to most programmers, but would still include a lot of people)?
As per yesterday's lab meeting, what I'd like to do in the short term is
tidy up the outstanding FIXME's and non-compliant bits of our lessons by
the end of April, so that we can give them all citeable DOIs, call that
a release, and then talk in May and over the summer about the next major
re-org. We've learned a lot, both about how to teach and about how to
work together on writing this stuff; let's wait 'til exam season is
behind us and then figure out what the next iteration looks like.
Thanks,
Greg
