Carl: Great points about the uses of VMs, and I would definitely support 
introducing them as an option that may become one''s primary work environment. 
I just don't think they should be a substitute for dealing with installation 
hassles. 
I also still think that students could and should leave a SWC workshop with at 
least 90% of the critical software installed locally (python, shell, git), and 
they should know how to navigate within those systems. 
 
Titus: I definitely agree (shocker!) with your point "that the two day 
workshops are incredibly important because most students won’t sign up for 
longer training". I am not anti-bootcamp, but mainly agitating for them to be 
more realistically sold and maybe with a bit of a different focus, at least for 
rank beginners.
