as an addition / variation to this, it's possible to install git-bash (with the "default Windows console" option, as described in that archived email), and to then put the nano executable and the DLLs from the nano distro for Windows into "C:\Program Files\Git\bin". This requires admin rights and is rather too difficult for an instruction given to newcomer level students, but might be good enough for setting up one system for a postdoc. And perhaps this could also be made into a more automated solution that might be more suitable for newcomers.
