Thanks everyone for the quick solution. 

I had seen the "windows console" instructions online but had initially avoided 
it, thinking it would set up some kind of hybrid DOS/bash prompt window. I'll 
give it a try.

The resolution to the problem has been merged into the default setup
instructions for workshops. It worked well for the recent workshop I
