When I started as an instructor I assumed that host institutions would pay for those things (plane tickets, hotel) up front, but so far (n=2) that has not been the case. Though the two workshops I'm teaching in June are paying for things in that manner.
I'm at a university so I understand the giant issues in this problem (I'm still waiting on reimbursement from my own university for expenses from last autumn) but this has been on my mind a lot lately and it will likely influence how much I teach in 2017 since money is going to be more scarce and I wont be able to float big bills.
