Thanks for the replies. Day 1 results: Some, but not all of the windows computers had non-working nano via gitbash. In one case, running the installer 2x and restarting fixed the problem.
For other users, from the terminal: notepad thesis.txt works just fine. The only hangup from using notepad is that shell scripts written on windows and scp'd onto linux/mac won't run b/c of the stupid line-ending incompatibility... Thanks for the quick replies!
