To be fair, Amazon offers this via their Xen virtual servers (aka EC2)
which uses S3 as a backend. They don't offer a FreeBSD image yet, but
when it comes out, I'll do a detailed cost analysis to see if it is
worth switching. (No reason to wait for a BSD image, the Linux ones will
do just fine, I'm just being picky.)

I haven't done a serious cost analysis yet since I only pay a few bucks
per month to rsync.net. It may not be worth switching because rsync.net
"Just Works", and setting up a proper EC2 client will take some
tweaking.

No, I think that's fine. I evaluated all the S3 clients a while back and
was suspicious of all of them, they all had various quirks and bugs.
That was a year ago, so things may have changed since then, but I think
its better to stick with standard protocols as well.
