Try http://www.simple-groupware.de/cms/WebDisk/IntegraTUMWebDisk. I have had good luck with it for external access to files. The nice thing is that is makes a cifs connection in the background to the cifs file server (samba or windows) so it obeys all the complex ACLs you have set up on your file server.
