Thanks to all who offered ideas on my port problem. I have done some
more reading and testing. What I believe the problem to be is with
ftp.gnu.org and why I can pull stuff down from there, but port isn't
having it, I don't know. I did look over the man page and yes I did
finally find the verbose command and I even see there is a means to
install ports locally, but I haven't figured out the syntax as port -
D directoryname/pakcagename doesn't seem to do the trick. Will have
to dig into this further, but if anyone has installed packages after
pulling them down, please let me know. I get the impression the
packages are just tarballs, not like a rpm or deb (Debian) package. I
believe my understand is that it untars the file, runs the configure
script, and installs the package after running make etc. Maybe I'm
wrong, but this is basically like installing a Debian or Redhat
package, but it uses source. Of course maybe I have no idea what I'm
typing about..grin
