I haven't had any occurrence of this.  The only problem I've had is  
vlc skipping on some ogg files that iTunes with the xiph-qt added  
plays fine. I only checked m3u files in rcdefaultapps and once I did  
this I was able to listen to descriptive videos from freedombox  
without having to click on the downloaded file. Even before using  
rcdefaultapp, when I specifically told a  downloaded playlist file to  
open with vlc it worked. Are you just clicking on the downloaded file  
or are you telling it to play with vlc? It's also possible that you  
changed too much in rcdefaultapp; did you keep a list of what you  
changed?
