Nope you're not the only one. Mine was doing that before upgrade
though. But so did Outspoken for Windows. back when I was using
that. Would go back to the previous window or aplication verbally,
although you might not actually be there. I think Outspoken did that
because of the multipal cursor system it was using, but not sure
about Vo and why it does it.
But mine has always anounced the previous window when bring up
another. Such as, if I now go start Fire, it will briefly anounce
"mail, inbox messages." Even though Fire is booting up probably
because perhaps briefly there is a blank window or screen as it boots
up. Even though I know Fire has started and is doing it's conecting
and so forth. Just can't explain it fully.

Addressing your comment about not being in the app you were in, and
having to tab back to it, I've discovered that vo will sometimes
read the title of a window (say safari) when I've closed the last
window in another app (say text edit) I don't know why it does
this, and for the longest time, I thought it had switched to safari
from text edit (or to finder from safari) However, what I've since
learned is that neither vo nor the mac has switched apps, only that
vo says it has. I can replicate this behavior every time now.
Go into finder, and launch safari. Open a couple windows, (command-
l to go to different sites) Then command-w to close the windows
you've created. After the last browser window closes, vo will
happily state finder, and read your sidebar, or column mode, or
whatever you've got open. However, another command-l opens your
open url box just as you would expect it to. So, what is
happening, is that the app isn't changing, only vo is getting
confused, and reading the app behind the one you're actually in.
I'm guessing this is a result of the front most window going blank
(as safari does when all windows are closed, or mail if you command-
w from the message selection window) It's not really a problem once
you know what's happening, but it did throw me off for a while, and
cause me to try switching back to apps I was still in. Has anyone
else experienced this, and Scott, is this what you're experiencing?
If it is, and others can verify this, let me know, and I'll post a
bug report for apple, if it's just me, then I'll dig more to see if
I can fix it, it could be my version of 10.4.4, since I'm still
using ver 8G31, and not the official release, it's possible it got
fixed before the final release if nobody else is having this
problem. However, it sounds like what Scott is having trouble
with, so thought I'd mention it.

Folks, I'd like someone to try a navigation experiment for me.
If you go to Finder and put it in the icon view, can you navigate
with the regular arrow keys. If so now switch to column mode and
see if you can do the same or if you wish try the reverse. Please
let me know if you experience a loss of movement feedback. I've
noticed this problem and hasn't really tried prior to upgrading to
10.4.4 and actually I like column view in some ways. You can use
the arrow keys to expand and clapse folders etc. no problem and in
icon view it doesn't seem to work as well. This is a little
separate from my requested experiment.
Btw, while I'm on the navigation issue. It seems to me that after
upgrading to 10.4.4 there are some issues, not major show
stoppers, but annoying things. Sometimes when closing a window, I
find myself no longer in lets say Finder, I'll all the sudden be
in Mail and I'll have to command tab back to Finder.
I've also noticed in a few instances where I'll go to create a new
message in Mail, I'll actually be somewhere other than the to
field and previously I was always there.
Just curious if anyone else has experienced any of these issues.
tnx
Scott
