Ah, interesting, I hadn't tried that so that is curious and wonder
what is going on. I wonder if this is more a Safari issue or what?

this only happens if I hit the command to quit Safari *while* a
download is in progress. When I cancel Safari from quitting and I
go back into the downloads window, I get a three items button, but
nothing else. The only way I know at that point if the file is
done is by constantly checking the desktop.
