Gabe,

I think perhaps you missed Travis' satire. I definitely saw tongue very firmly in cheek, there. Sounds to me as though Travis was agreeing with you.

Reminds me that a friend of mine was telling me how we've made such progress in computing: you can actually buy a 1 KW power supply if you want one. I was (and am) totally underwhelmed. Any idiot can make something work that takes more power. I'll be impressed when we can get things smaller, faster, quieter, and to consume leess power, not more. Fact is, I'm much more impressed with what the computer geniuses were able to do with computers 20, 30 years ago--with less space to work with--and getting amazing things done in that space-- than I am with these modern computer jockeys who write bloated, resource-intensive gee-whiz, "cutting-edge" software. It's an unfortunate byproduct of falling prices and exponential growth: hey, we've got so much space, we have enough to waste and can afford to be sloppy. Back in the day, every byte counted, so of necessity, programs had to run smaller, leaner, and more efficiently. Now it seems that since we can get away with less efficiency and so on, smaller and more efficient really doesn't count for much. After all, the machines will just get faster anyway, so why bother? Anyway, call me underwhelmed. I mean, really. Seems to me technology's been running to stand still. Jeez, even when I was a kid in the '80's, I remember reading the predictions that we'd all have household robots pretty soon! Well...apart from our Roomba (which is a very specialized sort of robot and not at all like the general-purpose household robots we were promised), I sure don't have one. And where are the other advances we were promised?

Course, none of that has anything to do with the original question...but I agree with your original point, as I suspect Travis does.
