If the talking ipod could read menus, keep in mind that it could read
all levels of menus. But like ssome mobile phones, it might only
read the top level or so.

My guess is that the amount of space taken up with the speech
files would be negligible. Based on the articles I've read, it
seems that the speech for the individual artists and tracks would
be generated by the PC when transfering files to the iPod,
creating tiny sound files with the info, so that the speech
synthesis software doesn't have to reside on the iPod itself. If
that's the case, how much space is used for this feature will vary
highly on how many artists, tracks, albums, and so on that you
have on your device. Even still, I can't imagine it taking more
than a gig, and that is if you have an incredibly extensive
collection of music. Probably far less. We're talking about super
tiny files.

Well, I have to say that I expected 27 gygs on my hard drive, and
what do I find? 10gygs or so was taken up with Tiger. I don't want
*that* to happen with the iPods.

Oh come on, we're not putting Jaws on it now are we? I'm sure that
Apple wouldn't want to compromise a lot of the storage space. If
they say you get 60GB or something they want to be as close to that

Now this is pretty cool, but how deeply will it cut into the
storage space for songs,I wonder?

As an avid iPod user I haven't ever found a huge need for
talking menus, but I won't deny that it would simplify and
enhance use of the device. And it looks like the 6G iPod will
be speech capable. Here's one of several articles out there:
