You will, you can access the simple aspects of the firewall in the system preferences, (under sharing), and allow access to FTP, Windows Sharing, Web, SSH etc.
I don't think it prevents programs going out to the Internet though? It's not such a problem on OSX given the lack of viruses, and having to provide an admin password to install things, but it is a mild concern.
I assume you can get to more fine grained control by messing with the configurations via the command line, but I would only think about that if you had *very* good reason!
