I believe I've filed a bug to Apple about this. Pretty sure it is a

I have exactly the same trouble with TextEdit, but as I haven't
found any consistent reason for this happening, I haven't reported
it to Apple. I don't even have to switch apps for it to occur, just
go into the Styles area and then return to the body of the text.
But it is not consistent.
