In text eddit, command q will not execute until you have finished the dialog whether to save changes or not. I just click the save, or don't save functions with VO keys and spacebar. If after that point if you are getting no feedback from vo by vo keys and arrow keys, then command q again.Sometimes text eddit can be reluctant.

Never have tried using the letter y or command y for the dialog. I remember back in the days of Windows 95 and OSW could do the Alt Y which would have saved changes, but haven't realy played with that option with the Mac.

I changed the subject line to reflect the topic under discussion. I certainly need help in using VO with TextEdit. I have trouble editing with VO, and it seems like the VO cursor is in one place and the active cursor is in another. What is the command to tether the active cursor with the VO cursor? Also when I try to shut down the computer, I am informed that the open TextEdit program is preventing the shutdown. I am asked if I would like to save the changes to the document, and what is the command to say yes or no? I am afraid my JAWS and PC habits are interfeering here, since in a PC document all I have to do is press the "y" for yes and the "n" key for no, then the document closes. What is the command to close an open TE document? The command+q does not seem to be working for me. When editing for instance removing the 2 between 123, Which number do I focus on? Do I focus on the 1, or the 3? In a PC document with jaws I always focus on the 2 and press the delete key, and the 2 is removed. Also if I wanted to insert a 2 between the numbers of 13 all I had to do is focus on the 3 and press the 2 and the number is always inserted to the left of the character which has focus. So far, the inability for me to edit text in a TE document with consistency is driving me crazy. It seems that reading the keyboard commands and trying to edit is not working out. I need to be spoon fed one spoonfull at a time. Thanks for your help in this matter. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Scott Howell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "General discussions on all topics relating to the use of Mac OS X by theblind" <[email protected]>

As an aside, but yet related to this topic, I've noticed a very annoying behavior with Text Edit lately that I can't quite figure out how to really reproduce consistantly. Basically if I'm editing a text document, I switch to lets say Mail and come back later to Text Edit, the arrow keys will not read the text any longer. Its almost as though the Edit area is locked from me reading it with the regular cursor, but yet I can read it fine by navigating it with VO. It actually appears as though its locked as I can't seem to edit anything. Only quiting Text Edit resolve the problem. No matter if I bring the cursors together or turn VO on/off has no affect. Has anyone else noticed this?

tnx
