Maybe I've missed something here...but...
While I agree it would be nice in some cases to have that info
automatically, it is available with VO-H when on a link that doesn't ahve
an Alt tag specified. I can navigate this site's image links by using
it...and once i know the location of particular images, I don't have to
hit VO-H on every single one.
