Well I wouldn't go so far as to say that Sound Studio is the new
Sound Forge for the Mac but its certainly heading in the right
direction.
Regarding the last part of your message? I did know but I cannot
remember but I'm sure someone else here will be able to put you right.

Another alternative I'm playing with right now is Audasity, this is
a free
open source editor and its available across platforms including Mac
OS10,
Windows, LINUX etc.
