Yep those are very valid points indeed, that's the point I was getting at earlier when I said that you couldn't set search criteria in Mac Mails search facility, a damn pity but again there we are, who knows what may happen under Lepard.

Hi Dane,

Yes, I agree that Apple's Mail utility search features combined with the
ability to sort on different View option columns is a good way to search
for "archives". One useful thing it doesn't do is set date limits for your search -- it just gives you the sorted options and you have to go through
the appropriate items. This is one reason I use the Mail Archive search
facility, which also allows you to use Boolean arguments that eliminate
certain key combinations or look for others. The other reason for using
the Mail Archive search is that I can provide a context-rich link for other
forum users when I post -- many readers won't be subscribers or else
they may just be recent subscribers. The Mail Archive at
http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss%40macvisionaries.com/
can be searched by anybody.

But yes, your tip is a good one, as was James Austin's suggestion
about using Google in his July 26, 2007 post:

I don't know the answer to your question per say, but I've always found it useful to do the search via google. If you put the word or phrase in quotes,
then type the sight followed by a colon and then the website .

Example:
""OCR software" site:www.macvisionaries.com
(Above found through a search of the Mail Archives).

Cheers,

Esther

I'd like to take this opportunity to repeat a procedure I have here
which I find invaluable when looking up past messages I've received
from this list.
I have created a rule in Mac Mail which copies all messages from this
list to a separate email box, thus I have 2 copies, one in my in box
and the other in say another mailbox dedicated to this list, let's
call it Mac Discuss.
So now I have a mini archive of the subjects which have been
discussed here and I can search it at any time to bring up messages I
may be interested in by doing the following.
I go to the Mac Discuss mailbox by interacting with the mailbox
outline with VoiceOver and then type command-option f to bring up the
find text in mailboxes dialog, I then type in what I'm looking for
and tab to the messages table.
Here the results of my search are displayed, I can sort them using
the "sort" sub menu under the "view" menu.
Other people may have tips for searching in Mac Mail but I think this
is one of the best search facilities and certainly one of the easiest
to use I've ever come across in an email client, its just as good to
use as say the search facility in Eudora though Eudora's is far more
powerful as you can specify criteria or multiple criteria for your
search and I'm not aware of this facility being available in this
version of Mac mail, its a pity but there we are.
