Why can't we just send a copy of TextEdit to VaShaun? I just used pacifist to extract TextEdit app.... works fine. I suspect that in this case we could simply send a copy from our application folder.

VaShaun, I will send you a zipped folder that contains TextEdit. I don't know if I have time right now for instructions, but that would be a step closer.


After TextEdit is back in your applications folder you can insure that in the future TextEdit is used for RTF documents.

Instructions for mapping file type to specific application:

In regards to what App reads the RTF file type..if on your computer it is being mapped to Pages then do a get info on a selected RTF file (command I), and then focus to the Get Info window (command option F2 twice to get the window chooser if need be). You will need to interact with the scroll area (command option shift down arrow), then progress to the "Open With" section. Within that section is a pop up menu that lists potential apps along with an "other..." that would allow you to navigate and select an app.

Choose TextEdit

Below that pop up menu is a button to "Change All..." click that. In the future all RTF documents will open in TextEdit.

I think I agree with Apple, that it's easiest to take it into the
Apple Store along with the install disc.  The main reason is,
a soft-reinstall is easy for them, but not for you both because you're
new to Mac and because of the need for the Voice-Over support.
The other reason for letting the Apple Store handle this, is that
you don't know the status that monolingual and onyx left things
in.  It's actually safer to deal with the language localization
files by doing a custom install (that only puts in the English or
packages of your choice) rather than removing them.  So if
you can take it to a nearby Apple Store, I'd do that.  My local
Apple Store gives great service.  You can even make an
appointment with the genius bar beforehand on the web,
so you don't have to wait in line.  I've done this online, though
you don't need to.

On the specific web page under item chooser menu
type reserve and look for the fourth entry. Return
and then clicking on that with VO-keys space bar gets
me to the genius bar of my store, with a screen where
I identify myself as "Guest" and then on the next
screen choose my issue as concerning a "Mac"
You'll be prompted for your first name, last
name and email address in the blank fields
that you tab to and then I think you're taken to a
page where you can choose a time slot and, if
necessary, input a SHORT description of the problem.
(If use this and don't finish in time, the field is
ignored and goes out blank).  You don't need to
do all  this, and maybe it's different for your store,
but it's nice to know that these services exist
and are accessible.

Right now I'd just take this in and get this sorted.
I think the fix is pretty straightforward.

A simple copy of an app doesn't work.  Shaun,  can you try one more
thing to
check that TextEdit really isn't on your MacBook?  Because the
search in Spotlight brings up everything you have that references
TextEdit -- your mail messages, bookmarks, etc. and depending on
how you ran the search in Finder the TextEdit.app might still be on
your machine, but not appear to come up in your results.

Try bringing up the VoiceOver Application chooser menu:

control-option-F1 or, since you're on a laptop, you'll need to hold
down the function key, too for  control-option-function-F1

You need to press this sequence twice to bring up the Application
chooser menu.  I don't use this because I find it awkward to hold
down the three keys: function, control, and option with my left
hand and then hit the F1 key twice with my right hand, but you
can lock down the VoiceOver keys (control and option) first if you
like, with VO-keys+semi-colon.  You'll hear "enable control option
lock".  Then you only need to press the function key and the F1
key twice, and you can toggle off the VoiceOver keys lock with
another VO-keys+semi-colon.

So, assuming you're holding down the three leftmost keys on
the bottom of the keyboard, function+control+option, and
have tapped the F1 key twice (just to the right of the Escape key
at the top left of the keyboard), you should hear:

"Application Chooser Menu, 7 items"
arrow down to the bottom entry, which should be "Text Edit"
right arrow to "Text Edit Menu" and down arrow once to
"Go to Text Edit"

Carriage return and tell us what happens.  OS X is pretty resiliant,
so please first check whether TextEdit is still there.

If you need to, you can probably use a software application called
Pacifist, which allows you to extract individual applications off your
installer disc to repair or restore applications.

and they also give links to the software.  It appears to
be accessible.

However, since you have multiple items that you've removed,
and since I found a few review comments that said that
using Monoingual to remove language packages sometimes
complicates the use of Pacifist because inidividual language
localizations of apps have been deleted, and since you've
also mentioned using Monolingual and Onyx, it's probably
best to go slow with this.

Spotlight just brings up a e-mail header from one of my mail pieces
from another list. It is not oin my documents folder nor in the
trash. I actually want it fixed and I don't wknow what to do. I don't
like the attitudes of some of the list members and help is far and
inbetween. As far as installing Tiger it was a guess as I am not a
