Boy this is a tough one. Spell Checking is a system service built into the Cocoa text services. It's not something that you can turn on and off. You could use something like VI in the terminal but what a pain!

I am experimenting with removing the spelling checking options from an editor.

Now let me add this. I don't know what the nature of the disability is here, but as a dyslexic the prospect of sitting for an exam with out a spelling checker on my computer would be a nauseating idea.
