Maybe in older versions, but 2.6.5 has spell checking. Right under the
edit menu, including a check spelling as you type mode.

Try using Subethaedit. It does not use the spell-checker at all.
Formatting documents might be a challenge, but if you absolutely may
not have access to it at all, it's a good solution.

PS email me off list and I will send you a free version tonight.

Boy this is a tough one. Spell Checking is a system service built
into the Cocoa text services. It's not something that you can turn on
and off. You could use something like VI in the terminal but what a
pain!
I am experimenting with removing the spelling checking options from
an editor.
Now let me add this. I don't know what the nature of the disability
is here, but as a dyslexic the prospect of sitting for an exam with
out a spelling checker on my computer would be a nauseating idea.
Please contact me directly either by email or phone and I'll see what
I can do for you.

Hi everyone
This is an odd question I guess, however I have a student with a
disability sitting the HSC (Yr12 Final Exams). Its not enough to
turn off spell and grammar check.. I need to disable so he can't
simply turn back on.
I've only just been given the problem and need to solve before
tomorrow so thought I'd turn to you clever people!
Oh, he is using an iBook with Word and of course text edit...
thanks heaps!
