now i might be able to customise my desk top as i like it. how do i get a document that will explain the purpus of each application that's loaded on the mac? also is there a list of Voice over friendly software out there.

What you are talking about are called Aliases. You can use VO-Shift-M on a file or folder and choose "Make Alias." Then you can copy that Alias to the Desktop or wherever you want it.
