I noticed that when I do this and delete something from the alias folder it doesn't update the main folder. For example I have a pod- cast folder three or four levels into my Music folder. I created a alias to the pod-cast folder on my desktop. When I delete a podcast it doesn't delete from the original pod-cast folder. What do I do or create for this?

What you are talking about are called Aliases. You can use VO-Shift- M on a file or folder and choose "Make Alias." Then you can copy that Alias to the Desktop or wherever you want it.
