• Actually Scott, this is only true in Column mode. If you are in Icon or List mode, the new folder will still be created at root level.
Scott also said: You are suposed to be able to press command+option +control+f4 to unhighlight a folder, but doesn't work for me for some reason, thus is why I pointed out those steps on avoiding highlighting something once you enter the home folder.
• I haven't tested this on a full keyboard but deselecting with fn +control+option+cmd+f4 does work on my MacBook.
