Tim, The folder with my short name on it is fine. outside of that folder though there is a folder litterally named home. it is empty.

When pressing cmd+shift+h, the MacOs will take you to your home directory. The parent folder of this directory will be named whatever shortname you gave your account when setting up your Mac. Within that home folder you'll find folders for Documents, Music, Pictures and much more as well as your personal Library folder which contains needed Preferences and such.
